Abstract

The change in fertility rates is a trend that occurs in almost everyone except the poorest regions of Africa. The process of demographic transition began in European countries and spread across the planet. So this is a trend which is also found in Brazil, where the fertility rate is 1.95 children per woman according to the latest data from the IBGE. These changes are generally related to increased schooling, greater female participation in the labor market, increased access to contraceptive methods, increasing the cost of raising children and changing cultural values in relation to the number of children. In this context the present work searches to characterize the reduction of the fecundity in Aracaju and its main impacts, with the objective to detail the process, also disclosing the reality for quarters of the capital.
