Estimation of leaf area of xaraés using linear measurements

Abstract

The experiment was carried out at Faculdade de Ciências Agrárias e Veterinárias/UNESP, Jaboticabal Campus, São Paulo, Brazil. For this study 15 leaves were collected at random from Brachiariabrizantha cv. Xaraés canopy in February 2010 when the grass was with 25 days of regrowth (third cut) in order to estimate by linear dimensions the leaf area. It was evaluated the correlations between real leaf area (RLA) and the product of length and width of leaves (L x W), the maximum length of leaves (L) and the maximum width of leaves (W). Leaves of different sizes and positions in the canopy were used in this study. The results indicate that the estimation of leaf area of Xaraés can be performed using the length of leave which generated the equation RLA = 0.56 x (L) + 0,8 with a determination coefficient of 0.95.
