Abstract

This study proposed to evaluate the potentiality of passion fruit mesocarp (Passiflora edulis) as a biosorbent for the removal of hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] from aqueous solutions. The influence of pH, contact time and initial chromium concentration on the removal of Cr(VI) from the solutions was investigated. The biomaterial was obtained by thermal treatment at 400 °C. The determination of Cr(VI) was done by spectrophotometric UV-visible by complexation with 1,5-diphenylcarbazide, measuring the absorbance at a wavelength of 540 nm. The contact time necessary to attain equilibrium and the optimum pH were found to be 3 hours and 2.0, respectively. The kinetic of biosorption of Cr(VI) ions was described by a pseudo-second order kinetic model. The equilibrium isotherm data were analyzed using the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm equations and the parameters were determined by non-linear mathematical programming. The sorption process was reflected by Freundlich isotherm. The results show that the biosorbent removed, approximately, 74% of Cr(VI) in 180 minutes, with maximum adsorption capacity of 13,0 mg g-1.
