Radical mastectomy as treatment for chronic suppurative mastitis in Santa Ines sheep: a case report

Abstract

Mastitis is an inflammation of the mammary gland, origin bacterial, fungal or viral, and that promotes changes physical, chemical and pathological in the glandular tissue. This present study aimed to report the technique of bilateral radical mastectomy in Santa Ines sheep, with 24 months old, diagnosed with chronic suppurative mastitis at the Large Animal Clinic of Centre for Development of Livestock, Federal University of Bahia. Physical examination of mammary gland revealed swelling, soreness, hyperthermia, firm consistency and absence of milk secretion. Others laboratory tests performed such as complete blood count and measurement of plasma fibrinogen. The established clinical therapy based on the administration systemic of anti-inflammatory and antibiotics, besides the use of intramammary ointment and massaging the udder ointment. After three days of treatment there was an improvement in the inflammatory process, however was not observed the return of the mammary secretory function, opting perform the technique of bilateral radical mastectomy. Postoperatively, the animal treated with antibiotics and anti-inflammatory systemic, besides the treatment of the surgical wound receiving a medical discharge 14 days after surgery.
