Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the antimicrobial potential and hydroalcoholic extracts of Artocarpus heterophyllus L. For this we conducted a cross-sectional analytical study to test the antimicrobial activity of leaves and stem bark, in the form of crude extract of A. heterophyllus L. against strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae (ATCC 49619) and Escherichia coli (ATCC25753). Suspensions were made in 0.9% saline (w/v) to obtain a turbidity equivalent to 0,5 standard scale Mac Farland. An aliquot of 100 mL of this suspension was inoculated with swab in Petri dishes containing Mueller-Hinton solid medium. Subsequently, has been used filter paper discs, sterile and with 6 mm in diameter saturated with 10 micrograms of each extract extract and they were tested against the microorganisms. After 24 hours results were evaluated according to the formation of halos of inhibition around the discs. Bacterial species S. pneumoniae and E. coli showed resistance to the hydroalcoholic extract from the bark of A. heterophyllus, although the species S. pneumoniae has developed formation of 8,0 mm halo of inhibition for the hydroalcoholic leaf extract of A. Heterophyllus 10%, but this result resistance characterized, causes innocuous effects in the therapeutic use of this plant species for the bacterial species tested.
