Abstract

Dates from Brazilian energy balance show that ethanol accounted about 4.7% of all energy consumed in the country in 2011. An alternative for increasing the production of fuel and ensure the internal demand is the hydrolysis of lignocellulosic materials. Aim to contribute with the development of this process a virtual plant to produce ethanol by hydrolysis of sugarcane bagasse was built in this paper. The results were compared with those of a conventional mill, and they show that the integration of conventional process with the hydrolysis process increased the yield at 26% ethanol by volume. However this increase in the production also led to greater energy consumption for the plant.
